Replace your old John Deere Gauge Wheel with a RYAN NT Coil one
We caught up with broadacre farmer Bryce Chapman from Hoyleton, South Australia. Mr Chapman tells us how the RYAN NT Coil Gauge wheels went after he swapped them with the John Deere Gauge Wheels on his 1890 seeder.
Mr Chapman’s winning solution after replacing his John Deere Gauge Wheels
Mr Chapman originally purchased the RYAN NT Coil Gauge Wheels for his 2021 planting season. Overall, he was looking for a better solution to the standard gauge wheels sold by John Deere. Mr Chapman explained that the wheels have been fantastic since they first put them on.
“They’re a huge upgrade compared to the original John Deere ones that the seeder came with,” he said.
“We get moving a lot quicker after a rain now, and we even have the potential to go a bit longer in the evenings, too.
“These days, there is less trouble with stubble causing us dramas due to the gauge wheel cleaning ability.”
RYAN NT has designed their Gauge Wheel in a way that outperforms John Deere gauge wheels. When those conventional options get caked with mud, you lose valuable time and, worse, money.

Outperforms your standard John Deere Gauge Wheel
The RYAN NT Coil Gauge Wheel has a more open design than other brands. Outstandingly, this means there will be a noticeable reduction in mud build-up. We asked Bryce what stood out the most to him with the Ryan Gauge Wheels, and he responded by saying it was the way they clean themselves.
“Overall, our sowing speeds weren’t much different,” he explained.
“They just keep themselves a lot cleaner compared to what we were using.
“As far as wear goes, they seem like they'll last a while, compared to the John Deere Wheels.
“And, bearings, well bearings are bearings – but we haven't had many issues on that front.”

Too sticky for a John Deere Gauge Wheel – not for a Ryan one
Disc seeders allow farmers to cut through heavy, dry stubbles with minimal soil disturbance. However, they are limited in wet conditions due to mud build-up on the discs and gauge wheels. In addition to the self-cleaning aspect of the Ryan wheel, there is also a chamfered edge that cuts mud off the disc. Mr Chapman highlighted how when they get onto a sticky hay paddock or something similar with no cover, the wheels keep going.
“As long as the stubble is dry enough on top for us to cut it with the disc, we're away and seeding,” he said.
“The wheels would have done 13 to 14 thousand acres now.
“And, apart from the paint, they don't look much different from how they came out of the box.”

Options to suit your seeder or planter
It’s simple to fit the RYAN NT Coil Gauge Wheels to your machine because they are designed to fit most disc planting units. We have several hub patterns for the gauge wheel, including a Holden HT pattern. Further, RYAN NT has just released an extra-narrow version to suit Horsch single disc systems.
Avoid the frustrations of delaying planting for a clogged-up disc machine. RYAN NT Coil gauge wheels allow disc machines to match a tined rig in the wet.
Our gauge wheels have been fitted to many models, including John Deere, Kinze, AGCO White, Serafin, Horsch, Great Plains, Norseman, Excel, and Boss.
